Kuleana Coral Restoration
Founded in 2019, Kuleana Coral Restoration was started by a diverse team of Native Hawaiians, scientists and ocean advocates determined to restore the degraded coral reefs surrounding their home island of Oahu.
By combining indigenous and modern scientific practices, Kuleana Coral works in the essence of aina momona, with a goal of abundant reef ecosystems.
Purpose of Activity
In the past 30 years approximately 50% of coral reefs around the world have been lost.
Without drastic action we could lose 90% of the world’s coral reefs by 2050.
Kuleana Coral is working to put degraded reef ecosystems on a path to resilience so they can persist naturally and without human intervention.
Activities
Focusing on Hawaii’s coral reefs, Kuleana coral takes direct action on three objectives:
1. Coral restoration of damaged coral reefs around Oahu.
By developing coral restoration practices specific to Hawaii, Kuleana Coral aims to develop affordable and scalable techniques that will be applied islandwide.
2. Reef Monitoring and Mapping, in which Kuleana Coral monitors coral reefs to inform eco-based management decisions.
Systems of cameras map existing reefs, tracking the success of restored corals and quantifying populations of marine animals.
3. Kuleana Education and outreach within the community to educate locals and visitors about the importance of ocean ecosystems and our kuleana to protect them.
