Sustainable Coastlines Hawaiʻi

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii (SCH) takes keeping our beaches clean into our own hands while making the work fun. What we’ve learned along the way is that cleanups can only do so much. We now utilize our cleanups to inspire better consumer behaviors and continued coastal stewardship through cleanups, education, social media and more.

Purpose of Activity

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii (SCH) has a mission to inspire communities to care for coastlines. SCH envisions a world of inspired people, clean beaches, and healthy coastlines. Our mission is realized through our two pillars: Action & Inspiration. Within the action pillar, SCH uses large-scale cleanups and restoration festivals to activate community around the issue of plastic pollution to focus attention on proactive solutions to the problem. Activities

We also work at events and with businesses to move toward zero-waste through our SustainEvents waste diversion and composting program. Within our Inspirations pillar, our (Re)Learning team works directly in classrooms around Hawaii (and the world through online presentations), using hands-on and experiential learning to foster a connected future generation of change makers. Our outreach team creatively uses online media and innovative experiences to reach millions – ages keiki (children) through kupuna (elders).

History

2010
Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii started with 8 friends sitting around a table in a small house in Kaimuki. Inspired by our good friends at Sustainable Coastlines in New Zealand, we decided to take keeping our beaches clean into our own hands while making the work fun.
